The functions of social work can be broadly categorized into three main areas: curative (or remedial), preventive, and developmental.

1. Curative / Remedial Function

This is the traditional function of social work, focusing on eliminating existing problems. It involves assisting individuals, families, and groups to overcome dysfunctions or crises.

• Examples: Counseling a person dealing with depression, rehabilitating drug addicts, or intervening in cases of domestic violence.

2. Preventive Function

Prevention focuses on early intervention to stop social problems from occurring or worsening. It identifies vulnerable populations and addresses the root causes of distress.

• Examples: Conducting awareness programs on substance abuse in schools, providing pre-marital counseling, or establishing community support systems to prevent child neglect.

3. Developmental Function

The developmental function aims to empower individuals and communities to reach their full potential and improve their overall quality of life. It goes beyond merely solving problems to actively promoting growth and social justice.
