Part A (Q1): What do you mean by Intake?

Expert Answer

Intake is the very first step in the social casework process. It is the initial phase where a person seeking help (the prospective client) makes first contact with the social worker or the social service agency.

The primary purposes of the intake process are:

  1. Initial Assessment: To briefly understand the nature of the client's problem and determine if they are in the right place to get help.
  2. Establishing Connection (Rapport Building): It is crucial for the social worker to create a welcoming, empathetic, and non-judgmental environment so the client feels safe sharing their vulnerabilities.
  3. Determining Eligibility: To check if the agency's services align with the client's needs and if the client meets the agency's criteria for service (e.g., geographic location, income level).
  4. Referral: If the agency cannot help, the intake worker's job is to provide a warm referral to another appropriate agency or resource.
  5. Contracting: If the agency can help, intake concludes with a mutual agreement (often informal) to proceed to the next phase of detailed study and assessment.
