Meaning of Social Case Work
Social Case Work is a primary method of social work concerned with the adjustment and development of the individual toward more satisfying human relations. Mary Richmond, a pioneer in the field, defined it as "those processes which develop personality through adjustments consciously effected, individual by individual, between men and their social environment."
Essentially, it is a one-to-one helping process. It involves a professional social worker helping a client (an individual or a family) who is struggling with a social, emotional, or economic problem that they cannot resolve on their own. The caseworker uses psychological understanding and community resources to help the client regain their social functioning.
Objectives of Social Case Work
The overarching goal is to enhance the social functioning of the individual. This is broken down into several specific objectives:
- To Help Clients Cope with Problems: The immediate objective is to help the individual resolve or better manage the specific problem that brought them to the agency (e.g., marital conflict, unemployment, substance abuse).
- To Facilitate Adjustment: To help the individual adjust to their environment, or, conversely, to help modify the environment to better suit the individual's needs.
- To Enhance Problem-Solving Skills: Casework does not aim to create dependency. A core objective is to teach the client better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills so they can handle future crises independently.
- To Build Ego Strength and Self-Esteem: Many clients arrive feeling defeated and worthless. Casework aims to restore their self-confidence, helping them recognize their own strengths and capacities.
- To Mobilize Resources: To act as a bridge between the client and necessary community resources (e.g., healthcare, financial aid, legal aid) that they might not know how to access on their own.
- To Prevent Social Breakdown: By intervening early in an individual's crisis, casework aims to prevent more severe personal or social breakdown (e.g., preventing a struggling youth from turning to crime).
