Part B (Q8): Write a note on farm and non-farm based livelihood activities.
In developing countries like India, livelihoods are broadly categorized into two sectors, particularly in rural areas: farm-based and non-farm-based. A sustainable rural economy requires a healthy balance of both.
Farm-Based Livelihood Activities
These are economic activities directly related to the cultivation of land or the rearing of animals.
- Crop Cultivation: Growing food crops (wheat, rice) or cash crops (cotton, sugarcane). This is the primary source of livelihood for the majority of the rural poor but is highly vulnerable to erratic monsoons and climate change.
- Animal Husbandry: Rearing livestock like cows, buffaloes, goats, or poultry. This provides a crucial secondary income (through milk, eggs, or meat) and acts as an insurance mechanism during crop failure.
- Allied Activities: Includes fisheries, aquaculture, beekeeping (apiculture), and sericulture (silk production).
Challenges: High dependence on weather, shrinking landholdings due to population pressure, lack of modern irrigation, and low market prices for produce.
Non-Farm Based Livelihood Activities
These encompass all economic activities in rural areas that are not directly related to primary agricultural production.
- Agro-Processing: Adding value to agricultural produce, such as milling wheat, making jams from local fruits, or producing jaggery from sugarcane.
- Manufacturing and Handicrafts: Handloom weaving, pottery, basket making, carpentry, and tailoring.
- Services and Trade: Running small grocery shops (kirana), repair shops (for tractors or mobile phones), transport services (driving an auto-rickshaw), or rural tourism.
- Wage Labor: Working on construction sites (like under MGNREGA) or in nearby factories.
Significance: Non-farm activities are absolutely critical for poverty reduction. They absorb the surplus labor from agriculture, provide income during the off-season (when there is no farming activity), and are generally more resilient to climate shocks than farming. Promoting non-farm livelihoods is a major focus of government missions like NRLM.
