Q3
5 Marks
Part A (Q3): Explain Social Action and its objectives.
Expert Answer
Social Action is an organized, collective effort to change or reform social and economic institutions, policies, or oppressive structures. It is the most confrontational of the social work methods, typically deployed when collaborative methods fail and those in power refuse to negotiate.
Objectives of Social Action:
- Structural Change: Unlike methods that help an individual adjust to society, social action aims to change the oppressive structures of society itself (e.g., abolishing discriminatory laws).
- Redistribution of Power: Empowering marginalized groups (the "have-nots") to demand their fair share of wealth, resources, and decision-making power from the dominant groups (the "haves").
- Prevention of Exploitation: To actively resist and halt practices that exploit vulnerable populations, such as bonded labor or illegal evictions.
- Mass Conscientization: To awaken the masses from apathy, making them critically aware of their rights and the root causes of their oppression.
