Part A (Q4): Mention the rights of older persons.

Expert Answer

The United Nations Principles for Older Persons (adopted in 1991) outline the fundamental rights that must be guaranteed to the elderly. These are generally categorized into five core principles:

  1. Independence: The right to access adequate food, water, shelter, clothing, and healthcare. The right to work or access income-generating opportunities, and to live in a safe, adaptable environment.
  2. Participation: The right to remain actively involved in society, to share their knowledge and skills with younger generations, and to form associations or movements of older persons.
  3. Care: The right to benefit from family and community care. The right to access healthcare services that help them maintain optimum physical and mental functioning, and the right to enjoy human rights even when residing in care facilities.
  4. Self-Fulfillment: The right to pursue opportunities for the full development of their potential, including access to educational, cultural, and recreational resources.
  5. Dignity: The right to live in dignity and security, entirely free from exploitation and physical or mental abuse. The right to be treated fairly regardless of age, gender, racial or ethnic background, or disability.
